Light values and shapes are the two essential elements of painting. These two values enable us to see and feel the space, form, structure, perspective and texture around us. Author and artist Chinkok Tan has developed an easytoteach and easytolearn method for painting watercolor that will allow anyone to achieve good results with a minimum of study time.Tan combines his clear teaching on seeing color values in light with an equally clear and simple teaching on seeing shapes properly. His threestep painting process develops the form of an object by adding shade and detail, while still keeping the process simple for the beginner. This method eliminates the need for complicated courses in drawing, anatomy, perspective and color theory.* Helps simplify the process of watercolor painting without simplifying the results* Teaches how to paint directly and immediately using shapes and light values

I was a bit disappointed with the Watercolor Basics book. The cover looked great, but the content felt too basic for my experience level. I expected more advanced techniques. It might be better suited for true beginners.

Great Values for Beginners
I got the Watercolor Basics: Shape and Light Value book as a gift for my sister who's just starting out with watercolors. The explanations of shape and value are super clear, and the illustrations are really helpful. She’s been practicing every day!

Useful but Lacks Depth
The Watercolor Basics book is decent for beginners, but I wish it dove deeper into techniques. It covers shape and light value well, but I found myself wanting more info about mixing colors. Still a solid buy for someone just getting into painting.
