Product Description Twentysix people of all ages and backgroundsincluding a lawyer, a farmer's wife, an actress, a priest, and a schoolgirldiscuss their lives and their social, political, and geographical environment in Poland From School Library Journal ea. vol: 60p. maps. photogs. glossary. index. (Living Here Series). Bookwright Pr, dist. by Watts. Sept. 1985. PLB $10.90. Grade 59 As in the other books in this series, these nations are explored through the selfdescriptive statements of 26 citizens representing a sampling of the population. In . . .Poland , for example, this includes an architect, a farmer and two journalists; in . . .the Netherlands, a policewoman, a soccer player and a harbor pilot are profiled. Each clearly presented narrative occupies two facing pages and uses three sharp color photographs: a portrait and two shots of the individual at home and work. While these books are no substitute for the broader standard works on this level, they succeed by providing a personal viewpoint which conventional geography books omit. A serious problem with . . .Poland is the somewhat illusory picture of political stability and economic prosperity which is created. Little reference is made to either the struggle for independent trade unions or to the chronic shortages of basic goods reported by many Poles. In this regard, a more accurate picture is presented in Christine Pfeiffer's Poland: Land of Freedom Fighters (Dillon, 1984). Each book contains an index, one page of facts and statistics, a map of the nation with an inset showing its position within the continent and a glossary of unfamiliar terms. William G.
