Maria de Conceicao's clothes are feminine, elegant, nostalgic, classic. One ingenious aspect of her work is her fabric contemporary and antique silks, cottons, satins, velvets, laces, chiffons, and other materials, in colors as delicate and pure as the fabrics themselves, blend gracefully in her clothing compositions. Various techniques...stitchery, collage, applique, patchwork, knitting, crochet, embroidery...play sometimes exuberant, sometimes subtle roles in the finished workofart clothing. It is the juxtaposition of very different fabrics and technqieus that enrich the surfaces and create a multitude of effects. Sao also demonstrates how to transform woolens into unique objects of art, how to dressup or recreate old garments, how to design reversible clothing, and how her techniques can be applied to objects in the home and to fine art.
