Mitchells 'The Vanishing Point'. Alle drei Romane setzen sich mit einem zwischen beiden Kulturen bestehenden Mentalittskonflikt auseinander. berdies beschftigen sie sich eingehend mit der Vergangenheit Kanadas und der Identitt dieser multikulturellen Nation, welche in hohem Mae auch von einer indigenen Tradition geprgt ist. Ein weiteres Ziel dieser Abhandlung ist ein mglichst umfassendes Bild der kanadischen Einstellung gegenber der indigenen Kultur von der ersten Besiedlung bis zur Neuzeit. Die drei Romane unterscheiden sich insofern, als dass jeder von ihnen sich mit einem anderen Jahrhundert der kanadischen Vergangenheit und somit einer anderen Zeitphase der Kolonisation beschftigt. Der Roman 'Wacousta or The Prophecy' behandelt die Belagerung des Fort Detroit durch die Ottawa und ihren Huptling Pontiac im Jahre 1763, und somit ein vergleichsweise frhes Stadium der Kolonisation. In 'The Temptations of Big Bear' wird mit der Assimilierung der Plains Cree im Zeitraum von 1876 bis 1885 dagegen bereits deren Endphase eingelutet. The 'Vanishing Point' hingegen befasst sich mit den unmittelbaren Konsequenzen dieser Assimilationspolitik. Der Handlungsverlauf vollzieht sich weitestgehend auf dem Gebiet des 'Paradise Valley' Reservats der Stonys in der Nhe von Calgary in den fnfziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts.
