Born in Los Angeles, a blueeyed descendant of the Nez Perce band, Patricia Penn Hilden passed in white society, a vanished Indian, and safe. In this memoir of her urban, mixedblood experience, she recalls her grandfather, a lingering presence and connection to traditions and people that rarely figure in mainstream American cultures notions of Indian identity. Photos & illustrations.

I picked up 'When Nickels Were Indians' after hearing about it in a podcast. The storytelling is captivating, and it dives deep into a less-known part of American history. I found the author's perspective refreshing, and it really made me think about the narratives we often overlook. Highly recommended for anyone who loves historical insights!

Disappointed with the content
I expected more depth from 'When Nickels Were Indians'. The concept is great, but the execution fell flat for me. Some facts felt repetitive and I was hoping for a more thorough exploration. I wanted to love it, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. Would not recommend.

Interesting but a bit slow at times
This book has some incredible stories but there were moments where it felt a bit dragged out. The historical context is really engaging, but I found myself skimming through some chapters. Still worth a read if you have an interest in Native American history, just be ready for some lengthy sections!
