When night falls in Haiti, its time for stories. The storyteller says kric, the audience responds krac, and all of the children become very excited. This collection brings you wonderful treasures from a country that is rich in spirit and culture. Through lively tales remembered from childhood, storyteller Liliane Nerette Louis shares with readers and listeners the warmth, fondness, and humor of her beautiful and mysterious homeland. The 28 tales are arranged by subjects and themesBouki and Malis (mythical characters in Haitian folklore); stepmothers; animals; kings and princes; ghosts, zonbi, and tonton makout; and love and courtship. Louis also shares a variety of tantalizing, traditional recipes. In addition, a historical background, color and blackandwhite photographs, and line drawings are included, making this a valuable resource for educators and students.

As someone who loves folklore, this book was an absolute delight! The Kric Krac stories are wonderfully told and transport you into the heart of Haitian culture. The illustrations are vibrant and add so much life to the tales. Highly recommend if you're interested in world folklore!

Mixed Feelings About This Collection
I found some stories in 'When Night Falls' to be enchanting, but others felt a bit drawn out. The writing sometimes loses momentum, which was disappointing. Still, it offers a unique glimpse into Haitian traditions that you won't find elsewhere. Worth a read, just not my favorite.

Beautiful Folktales but Poor Binding
I really enjoyed the stories in this collection, but I was frustrated when the binding started to come apart after just a few reads. The content is captivating, but I wish the book had been made with better materials. It's a shame because the tales are something special!
