Product Description Youngsters search the city as Bear hides in the subway, in a traffic jam, in a city park, on an apartmentlined street, and at a baseball game, in a colorful verse about all the intriguing things to see and do in the city. From School Library Journal PreSchoolK In forced rhyme, Nims describes city scenes with street musicians, subway turnstiles, suspension bridges, doormen on busy streets, and views from a harbor. Children are asked to look for a teddy bear who is hidden among these props. Each righthand page carries the refrain: But I am looking for a bear. Can you show mewhere is the bear?'' While aiming for simplicity, this repetition becomes tedious. The action follows a rather arbitrary sequencing based on various urban locations, but there is no story as such. The format is cluttered and some items are not clearly recognizable. Illustrations show awkwardly proportioned figures in stiff poses, frozen in time. If you need hidden picture stories, consider Baker's Hide and Snake (HBJ, 1991) or Jonas's The Trek (Greenwillow, 1989).
