Writer and filmmaker Claire Burch lost her sight during a heart attack nearly two years ago. Her new book of poetry, Where Never Is Forever, was mostly written following this event and contains a section titled Now I Am Blind, which has surprising imagery as well as some dark humor about her present condition. The book evokes the sarcastic wit of e.e. cummings and is playful in form although it touches on personal tragedy, such as the death of a child and her unsuccessful attempt to invoke the comfort of formal religion. Anger at Yahweh, who she describes as the God from Brooklyn, is a running motif, but the collection is characterized by questions about belief that she cannot resolve. Under the light hearted goofiness, the reader glimpses a profound sadness that lurks in this little book. Catching the beat, we are taken on a Coney Island ride of emotion and the roller coaster effect is intense. Surreal fantasies involving the Bancroft Library of UC Berkeley add to the unsolved mystery of the work. Wanting to fall asleep on a display case in the Bancroft and turn into acid free paper, What was she thinking. Bawdy asides make the book fun to read as it perilously describes a familyfilled life. The key to this collection is rhythm, as in jazz. Many of the poems are also lyrics for her songs.
