Seit 1978 ist er als Redakteur bei der FAZ fur den Bereich Nordafrika und Naher Osten zustandig. Zahlreiche Buchveroffentlichungen zum Thema Islam, darunter Muhammads Erben (1999) und Denker des Propheten. Die Philosophie des Islam (2000). Im Allitera Verlag ist Die Laute Osmans. Turkische Literatur im 20. Jahrhundert (2003) erhaltlich.
