Dafoe wirkte bereits in dutzenden Filmen mit, in kommerziellen, wie in experimentellen. In vielen Fllen mimte Dafoe dstere und zwielichtige Charaktere auf der Leinwand, wie beispielsweise seine Rollen als Antagonist in den Hollywoodfilmen "Speed II Cruise Control" und "Spiderman". Dafoe ist jedoch auch humorvollen Figuren nicht abgeneigt, wie z.B. in dem Film "The Life Aquatic" von 2004, in welchem er einen schwbischen Meeresforscher mit Namen Klaus Daimler, an der Seite von Bill Murray gibt. Trotz des hohen Bekanntheitsgrades, den Willem Dafoe durch seine schauspielerische Arbeit beim amerikanischen Film erlangt hat, ist sich nur der kleinere Teil der Zuschauer darber im Klaren, dass Dafoes knstlerische Ttigkeit vor allem durch seine Arbeit als Bhnendarsteller gekennzeichnet ist. Die Geschichte von Willem Dafoe als Schauspieler, ist untrennbar mit seinem Wirken als Knstler bei der amerikanischen Performancegruppe The Wooster Group verbunden. Die Schauspielkunst Willem Dafoes bewegt sich damit zwischen zwei, in hohem Mae, differenzierten Ebenen schauspielerischer Arbeit. Auf der einen Seite sein Schauspiel bei (zum groen Teil kommerziellen) Filmen der amerikanischen Filmindustrie, und auf der anderen Seite seine knstlerische Arbeit als Performer der Wooster Group. Fr die Wooster Group bedeutet Dekonstruktion Kritik an bestehenden Erscheinungsformen der amerikanischen Gesellschaft.
