Als Hauptgrund dafr ist die weiter voranschreitende Globalisierung zu nennen. Das Wachstum allein sagt jedoch nichts ber die Verteilung der Verkehrsstrme aus. Diese hngt mageblich von bestimmten Rahmenbedingungen ab, wie z.B. dem bedarfsgerechten Ausbau der Flughafeninfrastruktur. Doch etablierte europische Luftverkehrsstandorte und insbesondere Frankfurt haben massive Schwierigkeiten, ihre Drehkreuze zeitgerecht an das wachsende Verkehrsaufkommen anzupassen. Diese Schwche ist gleichzeitig eine Wettbewerbschance fr gnstig gelegene auereuropische Standorte. So haben die Golfstaaten allen voran Dubai die Bedeutung eines prosperierenden Luftverkehrssektors erkannt und investieren massiv in den Ausbau dieses Bereichs. Erklrtes Ziel ist es, Geschft von den Drehkreuzen Asiens und Europas abzuziehen und auf Kosten der etablierten Standorte zu wachsen (Vgl. Hogan 2008, S. 1). Demnach besteht mglicherweise die Gefahr, dass die europischen Luftverkehrsstandorte was die Verteilung internationaler Verkehrsstrme und die damit direkt und indirekt zusammenhngende Wertschpfung betrifft ins Hintertreffen geraten und insgesamt an Bedeutung verlieren. Inwieweit dies zu befrchten ist, hat fr Europa und speziell fr Deutschland groe wirtschaftliche Relevanz. Darum besteht ein Interesse daran herauszufinden, wie wettbewerbsfhig die europischen Luftverkehrsstandorte im Vergleich zu den aufstrebenden Standorten im Mittleren Osten heute noch sind und knftig voraussichtlich sein werden.
