From School Library Journal KindergartenGrade 4Two compilations of childcentered and accessible poetry by wellknown poets such as Shel Silverstein, Emily Dickinson, and Edward Lear, as well as anonymous, traditional selections, and some lesserknown works. Each book contains extracts of longer poems, e.g., "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" (Songs), so that nothing exceeds two pages. Unfortunately, the flavor of the poetry is lessened when only a portion is included. There is no discernible theme in either volume and many of the entries can be found in other collections. The illustrations, done by several artists listed only in the acknowledgements, are serviceable at best, merely decorating the poetry instead of enhancing it. However, there is a good variety in these titles, and they will be handy for some quick and quiet reading. Where demand for a wider range of poetry is the rule, longer collections such as Louis Untermeyer's The Golden Books Family Treasury of Poetry (Golden, 1998) and Jack Prelutsky's The Random House Book of Poetry for Children (Random, 1983) are better choices.Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NY Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.
