Durch die Beschreibungen werden Prozesse transparenter und es kann versucht werden, sie zu optimieren und standardisieren. Das Business Process (Re )Engineering versucht, diese Ideen umzusetzen. Ein Workflow beschreibt dabei die Aktivitten von Geschftsvorfllen auf der konzeptuellen Ebene, dies ist die Basis fr das Optimieren und analysieren. Dabei haben sich verschiedene Systeme und Techniken entwickelt, die sowohl in Produktivbetrieb die einzelnen Arbeitsprozesse untersttzen, als auch bei der Planung und der Optimierung von diesen Prozessen helfen. Diese Arbeit soll einen speziellen Aspekt von Arbeitsprozessen untersuchen, nmlich immer wiederkehrende Muster in den Prozessen, die in Standards zur Modellierung als auch in Softwareprodukten abgebildet werden knnen: die sogenannten Workflow Patterns.
