The unlimited variety of ornamentation of which Gothic architecture admits is a further recommendation to its use in the construction of sepulchral memorials. This advantage, however, has its accompanying danger; for since it admits of every description of symbolic and decorative ornament, without materially affecting the principal design, objectionable as well as desirable embellishment may be easily introduced. A few hints, therefore, on the subject are here offered, chiefly by way of caution. We will first speak of simple decoration, and afterward of symbolism. Decorative Ornament. The use of ornament, invariably requiring a chastened and refined judgment, especially needs it when the tomb is the object to be adorned. A bad tastethe love of finery and display can never appear more contemptible and disgusting than over the grave of perishing mortality. A sepulchral memorial, however simple and unadorned, will offend no one ; but if decorated with bad taste, or overloaded with ornament, it will be a repulsive object to every person of correct judgment. The ornaments of some modern memorials give them a fantastic and ridiculous appearance. A cherub's head, with puffed cheeks and outspread wings, formed by one continuous line of clever flourishing, adorns the upper part of the memorial, while the inscription, written in letters of various shape and character, is also embellished with a profusion of unmeaning flourishes. Such specimens of ornamental penmanship may be necessary in the writingmaster's copybook, but are utterly unbecoming the gravity of sepulchral memorials.
