According to the WTO itself, its mission is "dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, the legal groundrules for international commerce and for trade policy. The agreements have three main objectives: to help trade flow as freely as possible, to achieve further liberalization gradually through negotiation, and to set up an impartial means of settling disputes." The world's attention was briefly caught by protestors in Seattle and the heavyhanded government response. Are these protestors simply spoiled hypocrites with nothing better to do? Some critics say that the WTO's real aim is to control the world to the advantage of the rich keeping the rich richer and the poor poorer. Others say that the WTO is designed to function as the economic equivalent of NATO and seek world hegemony for its controllers. This book seeks to illuminate some key issues related to the WTO as well as present a detailed bibliography for future reference.
