Writing Our Way 'Out' of the Margins, examines the personal experiences and understanding of how author Jeffrey A. White was othered in school due to his queer identity. White's work explores how he decided to enter the teaching profession, returning to that place that was so disheartening and harmful in his past school. Furthermore, White aims to expose readers to the negative effects of homophobia and heterosexism on queer students or those perceived to be queer; to recognise the interconnectedness of the personal and professional lives of teachers; and to recognise the positive effects an antioppression approach to education can have on the psyche of students.
