De la mme gnration que Chu TehChun et Zao WouKi, il est le seul rester en Chine, aprs un sjour en France dans l'atelier de J.M. Souverbie en 1947. Il traverse donc les grands bouleversements politiques que subit son pays. Pendant la Rvolution culturelle il est, comme tous les intellectuels, envoy aux champs et une grande partie de son oeuvre qui prcde cette priode est dtruite. Mais, dans la peinture comme ailleurs, tout ce qui ne vous dtruit pas vous renforce. Ces annes sombres lui permettent de renouer avec un sentiment et une connaissance de la nature qu'il traduira plus tard dans des encres magnifiques. Plus encore que Chu TehChun et Zao WouKi, il utilise l'nergie gestuelle si essentielle la grande tradition de la peinture chinoise pour rinterprter le monde en forces et en rythmes.
