Heutzutage, zwar eher in abgewandelter Weise (siehe nchstes Kapitel), begeistern sie nach wie vor Millionen von Menschen. Ursprnglich wurde unter dem Begriff Fabeltier' ein Mischwesen aus verschiedenen Tieren oder aus Tier und Mensch verstanden. Auch Wesen mit monstrser Vervielfltigung einzelner oder mehrerer Krperteile fielen unter diesen Begriff. Wie schon in der griechischen Mythologie und homerischen Literatur wurden Fabeltiere hufig als reale Verkrperungen unheimlicher bernatrlicher Mchte angesehen, welche als Geschpfe zwischen den Menschen und den Gttern entstanden. So stellen sie auch grtenteils eine Gefahr fr den Menschen dar.
