J.C.), acheve vers l'an 8 de notre ere, alors que la dynastie des Han occidentaux touche a sa fin, est un texte majeur dans l'histoire du confucianisme tant par son projet qui est de retrouver le souffle des Classiques dans une synthese recouvrant une grande part des questions de son temps , que par sa forme inspiree du rythme et de la fragmentation des Entretiens de Confucius. Il se presente comme un recueil de brefs dialogues entre Yang Xiong et un interlocuteur anonyme. Ecrit dans une langue cultivant la concision et la retenue, ce texte s'articule autour de trois grands axes: l'affirmation d'une urgence a renouer avec une vie veritablement ethique, en prenant pour horizon un Confucius a la fois maitre proche de nous et Saint d'une profondeur insondable; la critique sur un mode souvent ironique de la doxa de son temps; et enfin la reflexion historique, qui a travers de breves observations sur les grandes figures depuis l'epoque des Royaumes combattants (403222) jusqu'a celle contemporaine de Yang Xiong, plonge le lecteur au milieu d'une multitude de modeles et contremodeles. Cette tentative d'ecrire de nouveaux Entretiens pour son temps a suscite de vifs debats des son apparition, mais le Fayan est reste jusqu'au douzieme siecle une reference incontournable dans l'heritage confuceen. Il en a par la suite ete exclu avec l'affirmation de l'orthodoxie " neoconfuceenne ", profondement hostile au projet litteraire et philosophique du Fayan. Heritant de cette desaffection, la sinologie moderne n'a propose que quelques rares etudes et traductions de ce texte, et aucune traduction annotee en langue occidentale n'avait ete publiee a ce jour.
