Wenn vom Wandel in Preussen um 1800 die Rede ist, so sind in der Regel die nach 1806 einsetzenden Reformen gemeint. Im Gegensatz dazu versucht der vorliegende Band andere, von der Forschung zur preussischen Geschichte bisher eher wenig beachtete Themen ins Blickfeld zu rucken und dabei insbesondere den geistigen Wandlungsprozessen innerhalb der zeitgenossischen preussischen Gesellschaft nachzugehen: Kulturgeschichtliche Fragestellungen wie auch die Veranderungen des Rechtswesens stehen im Zentrum der Beitrage, aber auch die Geschichte der Stande, die Autoritats und Vertrauenskrise in Preussen vor 1806 werden behandelt. Zu den Autoren des Bandes, der anlasslich des 70. Geburtstags von Gunter Birtsch erschienen ist, gehoren Klaus Berndl, Thomas Ertmann, Norbert Hinske, Eckhart Hellmuth, Diethelm Klippel, Peter Krause, Johannes Kunisch, Hartmut Lehmann, Immo Meenken, Wolfgang Neugebauer, Thomas Nutz und Julia Schreiner.
