Uber einhundert Reifeprufungsaufsatze von Schulern des Abiturjahrgangs 1947 sowie deren Lebenslaufe wurden fur diesen kultur und bildungsgeschichtlichen OstWestVergleich ausgewertet. Da sich die Abiturienten in ihren Abschlussarbeiten mit den existentiellen Problemen der Nachkriegszeit auseinandersetzen mussten, eroffnen diese Quellen eine neue und differenziertere Sichtweise zur Mentalitat der so genannten Flakhelfergeneration. Daruber hinaus nimmt die Studie die mit dem Abitur befassten Studienrate und das historische Umfeld der vier untersuchten Gymnasien in Hildesheim (Josephinum und Andreanum), Weimar (Schillerschule) und Erfurt (HumboldtOberschule) in den Blick. Dabei wird deutlich, wie die Institution Gymnasium und die ihr zugrunde liegenden humanistischen Traditionen durch Nationalsozialismus und Stalinismus beeinflusst wurden. In der Gegenuberstellung manifestiert sich zugleich die zunehmende Differenzierung von Verhaltens und Deutungsmustern in Ost und West.
