Das Verhaltnis von Gesellschaft und Staat, Leitkategorien moderner sozialer und politischer Systeme, wird seit mehr als 200 Jahren unter dem Begriff der Burgergesellschaft diskutiert. In den sozialistischen Staaten sowie in den osteuropaischen Transformationsstaaten nach 1989 entstanden aus den Dissidentenbewegungen heraus eigenstandige Konzepte. Der Band dokumentiert die intellektuellen Auseinandersetzungen um Begriffe wie Burger, Staatsburgerschaft, Menschenrechte, Burgergesellschaft, Gemeinschaft, Arbeit fur die Nation, unpolitische Politik oder Gemeinwohl anhand von tschechischen, slowakischen und polnischen Beispielen. Es zeigt sich, dass das Konzept der Civil society keinesfalls als rein westliches Modell zu interpretieren ist, sondern dass in Tschechien und seinen Nachbarstaaten Spezifika und bereits seit der Aufklarung besondere Traditionslinien entwickelt wurden. Der dritte Teil des Bandes stellt Schlusseltexte von tschechischen Theoretikern, mehrheitlich erstmals in deutscher Ubersetzung, vor (V. Benda, K. Capek, V. Cerny, K. Havlicek Borovsky, E. Mandler, T. G. Masaryk, J. Nemec, J. Patocka, F. Peroutka, E. Radl, L. Vaculik).
