Hoffmanns am Magnetismus ist unbestritten. Die auf Suggestion und hypnotischen Schlaf beruhende Methode, entdeckt von dem Arzt Franz Anton Memer, die sich generell groem Interesse in der europischen Romantik erfreute, spielt in fast allen seinen Erzhlungen eine Rolle. Die Erzhlung, 'Der Magnetiseur', die kein gutes Ende nimmt, handelt von dem Magnetiseur Alban, der sich durch besondere Fhigkeiten auszeichnet und etwa Trume fr sich nutzbar macht um Macht ber eine Familie zu erhalten. Der knappe Inhalt der Erzhlung, die 1814 in der Erzhlsammlung 'Phantasiestcke in Callots Manier' erschien, und dessen Sinn Hoffmann verschleierte, wie Jaques Callot seine Zeichnungen, verweist bereits auf eine kritische Einstellung gegenber hypnotischen Methoden seinerseits. Doch Hoffmann, der gern die Tiefen des Unbewussten erforscht, hat Bedeutungsvielfalt geschaffen und die Thematik des Magnetismus genutzt um einen breiteren Interpretations Spielraum zu schaffen. So versucht die Analyse die Schichten zu entblttern und in die Tiefen der Erzhlung zu blicken.
