Die Novelle Die Arme Baronin' wird eingehend interpretiert und an mglichen Textstellen mit der Figur der Regine aus dem 8. Kapitel verglichen. Die Fragestellung hierbei ist, inwieweit Keller die beiden oberflchlich betrachtet hnlichen Novellen dem Leser differenziert darlegt. Die Novelle beginnt mit einem einleitenden Satz des neutralen Erzhlers, der alle Informationen beinhaltet, die der Leser bentigt, um sich von der Situation ein Bild machen zu knnen. Es wird Brandolf, ein junger Rechtsgelehrter' (Keller, S.121) vorgestellt, ebenso die auf der Treppe kauernde Baronin und die Handlung, die beide zum ersten Mal zusammengefhrt. Der Leser wird in die Szene hineingestoen und hat durch diesen unmittelbaren Handlungseinstieg sofort die Bilderfolge vor Augen, wie Brandolf mit errtetem Gesicht die Treppe hinaufjagt und dabei unabsichtlich eine weibliche Person, welche Messer an der Treppe blank scheuert (vgl.), umstt. hnlich dem Reginekapitel lernen sich die beiden Hauptcharaktere auf einer Treppe kennen, somit gewinnt das Wort Treppenheirat einen doppeldeutigen Sinn. Spannung wird aufgebaut, denn der Leser fragt sich, welche Reaktion nun folgen wird. Das vermeintliche Dienstmdchen sticht Brandolf mit dem Messer in die Ferse, woraufhin dieser sich noch einmal umblickt und das zornrote, jugendliche Gesicht einer Frau erblickt (vgl.). ber Ort und Zeit werden nur vage Angaben gemacht, die Lokalitt ist das Haus einer befreundeten Familie Brandolfs (vgl.) , die Zeit ist in den Sommermonaten einzuordnen, da im Folgenden die Familie im September nach Italien reist (Keller, S.124).
