Fokus des klinischen Forschungsfelds ist der alte Mensch auf der Intensivstation und das Phnomen der akuten Verwirrtheit, das im deutschsprachigem Raum als Delir und international auch als Delirium bezeichnet wird. In dem klinischen Alttag ist es besser als das Durchgangssyndrom" oder IntensivstationsSyndrom" bekannt. Genauso vielfltig wie die Ursachen fr das Delirium bei alten Menschen sind auch die Empfehlungen fr die medizinischen und pflegerischen Prventionen und korrigierenden Interventionen. Ein Schwerpunkt dieser Interventionen liegt im Bereich der Kommunikationsgestaltung bei agitierten Patienten und der beruhigenden Anwesenheit durch Pflegekrfte. Zur Kommunikationsgestaltung im Delir wird vereinzelt in der Literatur der Intensivpflege sowie auf Intensivpflegekongressen (Intensivpflegesymposium in Dsseldorf 2006 fr Pflegende kritisch Kranker) empfohlen, Kommunikationsmethoden aus dem Bereich der gerontopsychiatrischen Langzeitpflege fr die Situation der akuten Verwirrtheit auf der Intensivstation zu bernehmen.
