Ein knappes halbes Jahr nach der Machtergreifung durch den Nationalsozialismus beschloss das Reichskabinett am 14. Juli 1933 das Gesetz zur Verhutung erbkranken Nachwuchses. Die amtliche Begrundung lautete, den Volkskorper zu reinigen und die krankhaften Erbanlagen allmahlich auszumerzen. Der Rassismus des NSRegimes nach innen selektierte das eigene Volk in Wertvolle und Minderwertige. Psychisch und physisch Kranke, geistig Behinderte und sozial Unangepasste wurden zu minderwertigen Menschen abgestempelt und als Erbkranke durch Beschluss von Erbgesundheitsgerichten zwangssterilisiert. Der erbbiologische Reinigungswahn, der eine rassisch reine, erbgesunde, leistungsfahige Volksgemeinschaft zum Ziel erklarte, radikalisierte sich 1935 in der Zwangsabtreibung und 1940/41 im Krankenmord. Die Untersuchung analysiert erstmals auf der Grundlage der fast vollstandig erhaltenen Akten des Erbgesundheitsgerichts Passau die Praxis der Erb und Rassenpflege im ostbayerischen Raum. Schwerpunkte sind dabei die erbbiologische Erfassung der Bevolkerung durch die sechs staatlichen Gesundheitsamter, die Gutachtertatigkeit der Erbarzte, die Verhandlungen des Passauer Erbgerichts, Zwangssterilisation und abtreibung in den Krankhausern und als Fallbeispiel der Leidensweg eines jungen psychisch kranken Mannes aus Passau, der in der Vergasungsanstalt Hartheim ermordet wurde.
