Die Filmgattung 'Dokumentarfilm' hatte lange Zeit nur wenige Fans und erhielt dementsprechend nur einen stiefmtterlichen Sendeplatz im Fernsehprogramm. In den letzten Jahren erlebt der Dokumentarfilm einen richtigen Boom. Mit dem technischen Fortschritt bis hin zu den vernderten Sehgewohnheiten der Gesellschaft hat sich der Dokumentarfilm immer mehr etabliert und seine Darstellungsformen multipliziert. Unaufhaltsam wird mit diesem Filmformat experimentiert und es stellt sich die Frage, wie viel Wirklichkeit zeigt ein Dokumentarfilm beziehungsweise das Subgenre ethnographischer Film noch? Schlielich gehen RezipientInnen davon aus, dass ein Dokumentarfilm ihnen die Wirklichkeit einer beispielsweise fremden Kultur prsentiert. Im Buch wird das konstruierte Feld wie konstruieren FilmemacherInnen einen Dokumentarfilm dekonstruiert. Als Ausgangsposition wird der Film 'Surname Viet, Given Name Nam' (1989) von der Filmemacherin und Kulturtheoretikerin Trinh Thi MinhHa herangezogen. Anhand einer Film und Sequenzanalyse werden dekonstruierte Aspekte herausgearbeitet, die unter anderem veranschaulichen sollen, wie Wirklichkeit in einem ethnographischen Film dekonstruiert und sichtbar gemacht werden kann.
